SEA responds to the King’s Speech

Today the King’s Speech took place. This is an opportunity for the Government to set out the legislative agenda for the year ahead. You can read the full speech here.

Commenting on the measures announced in the King’s speech, Sam Smethers, Interim CEO of Surviving Economic Abuse, said: “We’re pleased to see the government announce two bills in today’s King’s Speech to start delivering its mission to halve violence against women and girls in a decade. However, to achieve this ambition the government must go beyond a criminal justice response to truly make a difference to women and girls’ lives.

“We urgently need a cross-government strategy, working hand-in-hand with expert partners from across the women’s sector, to prevent and close down opportunities for perpetrators to control and better support survivors to rebuild their lives.”
