Today, The Chancellor of the Exchequer presented his Autumn Budget. The Autumn Budget sets out the Government’s taxation and spending plans.
Responding to the Autumn Budget, Sam Smethers, CEO of Surviving Economic Abuse said:
“We welcome the Chancellor’s funding commitments in today’s Budget to accelerate progress towards halving violence against women and girls. But the Government must go further and faster.
“As living costs rise, survivors face an impossible choice – debt, destroyed credit and homelessness or staying with a dangerous abuser. And support with household bills can fail to reach those who need it most – the £100 household energy payment will be out of reach for a survivor whose bank accounts are controlled by a perpetrator. Survivors need investment in emergency flee funds and specialist economic abuse advocacy to help them reach freedom, stay safe and rebuild their lives.
“The Government’s new misogyny fund is a welcome step towards tackling the harmful beliefs that enable men to control women and their money. Some of the funding must be invested in supporting the 1 in 3 young women who experienced economic abuse in the last year alone. We need to help them spot the signs so that they can live their lives free from abuse.”
