The effects of economic abuse can be life-changing, but this form of abuse has never before been recognised in UK law. The Domestic Abuse Act (2021) for England and Wales includes economic abuse for the first time, which has the potential to bring real change for victims and survivors. Economic abuse can also potentially be prosecuted as controlling or coercive behaviour, including if it takes place after separation.
