SEA’s Survivor Stories Podcast. Episode 1: Rachel – “My ex-partner put his name on my mortgage. I had no idea”

Surviving Economic Abuse is delighted to launch it’s brand new podcast series, the Survivor Stories Podcast.

Through this series, SEA speaks to survivors about their lived experience of economic abuse and the impact that it has had on their lives, as well as their stories of hope, courage and resilience.

This first episode has a strong focus on housing, to coincide with SEA’s winter webinar series.

Survivors of economic abuse often face years of post-separation abuse and housing insecurity connected to their home. The ways in which systems are set up can be used by perpetrators to inflict further suffering to their victims. These systems include mortgages, the provision of legal aid, state benefits, homelessness and housing allocation policies, and the family and civil courts. Many survivors of domestic abuse describe the difficulties involved in breaking links with abusers with whom they share property.

In our first ever episode, Expert by Experience Group (EEG) member, Rachel, talks to journalist and SEA supporter, Marisa Bate, about her experience of economic abuse and housing.

Listen to the first episode here or search Surviving Economic Abuse on your usual streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Please note, the names of victim-survivors have been changed to protect their identity.

Thanks to Rachel for sharing her story and to journalist Marisa Bate for hosting.
