Surviving Economic Abuse responds to the King’s Speech

Today the King’s Speech took place. This is an opportunity for the Government to set out the legislative agenda for the year ahead. You can read the full speech here.

Sam Smethers, CEO of Surviving Economic Abuse, said: “We welcomed the recognition in today’s King’s Speech that women’s economic participation is crucial to living a life free of violence. But today’s speech failed to address the systems routinely exploited by domestic abusers to cause economic harm.

“The Government missed the opportunity to bring forward its promised Child Maintenance Service (CMS) legislative reform. With over four million children living in poverty, and the cost-of-living soaring, urgent reform is needed to ensure children receive the child maintenance they are entitled to.

“We welcome the introduction of the Financial Services Bill, which could strengthen protections for victim-survivors coerced into debt. We stand ready to work with government, regulators, and the financial sector to ensure the legislation delivers debt justice and helps survivors rebuild financial independence.”
